White Burgundies from Another Planet
For one week I've thought long and hard about what I could post on this dinner. (My tasting notes would do these bottles little justice) After a week of thought, the best I can come up with is a heartfelt thank you.
Thanks to the immense generosity of Drs. Feelgood & Music, I was able to partake in a celebration that resulted in experiencing two of the greatest white wines I've ever had. There's no accurate way to convey the joy and emotion in bottles like these- I can only describe these as if someone invited you to their house and surpised you with a private living-room concert by your favorite musician. Just you, good friends, and a few glasses of Engelbert Humperdinck.
Great wines provide such infinite depth, heghtened awareness- almost if you were given temporary super-powers (though with my luck my super-power would probably be something like having an invisible coffee maker or being mutually exceptional at both long division and curling...)
So with great genorisity and commraderie, Dr. Music cooked up some wonderful fried Oysters,
Dr. Feelgood popped some bottles, and Big Toe whopped an almost ridiculous amount of Morels into place. To hell with T-Bones and Ribeyes---This was man food.
The bottles opened were-
2000 Raveneau Chablis Grand Cru Butteaux:
(France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru)
Starting with just beautiful Chablis- Snapping one to full attention- aromas of citrus, minerals, and a touch of fennel. Full bodied, still a little tight, but "wow" wine. Chablis at its finest- Stopping here would have still been a great night.
1985 Domaine Ramonet Bâtard-Montrachet
(France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru)
What was I doing in 85? Wearing two different colored Air Jordan's, listening to ZZ Top, wearing clothes with lots of zippers. At least the folks of Dom. Ramonet were focussed. Mind bending juice.
1989 Domaine Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet
(France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru)
"1989- A number, another Summer, get down, power to the funky drummer, music hitting you hard, because you know its got soul! Brothers & Sisters!!!!!" This infinite wine will haunt me for the rest of my life....
Then we took another direction entirely and finished the night with some tasty Pinot Noir, and some great German Riesling.
As much as I like dining out, dining in with a couple of friends on a night like this is the only way to go. An incredible evening- Thank you for letting us partake!
(After dinner, Big Toe got to experience his first Holeman & Finch Burger.... He was a very happy soul!)
