Yes. That is a Jawa bearing a XMAS gift.
2006 Frederic Mabileau Saint-Nicolas-De-Bourgueil Les Rouillères
(France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Saint-Nicolas-De-Bourgueil) Cabernet Franc
Under $19 at Ansley Wine Merchants.
It is refreshing to see a red wine that is actually red (not purple or black with insane-o extraction). It is also refreshing to have one made organically, picked by hand, and with little or no lab intervention.
The Les Rouillères may be a basic wine, but it is not simple, in fact it feels still alive. Gravel, dried herbs, black tea, and blackberries with the stems and leaves attached. It is a pretty intense bouquet, that takes a little time to really bloom. Medium+ bodied with gripping (but not abrasive) tannins, a bit of acid, and a long rocky, and berried finish.
This red wine sees zero oak. It is fresh, unblemished, young, and really refreshing. Though I am not a cheerleader on the "no oak" bandwagon, I'm not a fan of over-oaking, and a basic wine like this doesn't need any.
This paired really well with marinated tempeh (olive oil, lemon juice, mint, and some other spices), with kale, and golden couscous
