Old And In The Way? The Wine Advocate Gets Even Grumpier

OldAndInTheWay

Gawt damned! Is there a shortage of Geritol? Why are the old folk all so cranky?

The independent consumer advocate, market maker, and wine critic, Robert Parker (and staff) has taken some lumps and made some swings in the past few weeks-- Mostly surrounding ethics (his and others).

Kicknut1 Kick-in-the-balls

Like him or not, or agree with his palate or not, Robert Parker has earned my respect.  He was a pioneering, extremely successful, self-made, consumer advocate in an industry that pre-Parker was filled with some serious BS (not that we are now free from serious BS).  Parker is arguably the world's most influential critic in any market.  But-- disagree with his opinion (or that of his staff) and prepare for a low blow to your credibility and expertise.

Mao_Jordan_cropped On eRobertParker.com, (of which I am still a paid member of  actually just canceled tonight- This B is finally gettin' a TIVO!!!) his bulletin board the "Mark Squires' Bulletin Board" has long been critical of those who disagree or speak up. Threads deleted, dissenters kicked off, and questions and threads erased (some of my favorite bloggers have been booted for disagreeing with the Wine Advocate.  Some have never been heard from again.)

In the past few weeks, the transparency of the Wine Advocate has been questioned, and the responses have been quite entertaining (if watching seniors beat their chests is fun to you).  For a publication that declares transparency, and the highest of ethical standards, some trips, dinners, and cavorting have seem to have raised some eyebrows and and people have tried to ask if these are in violation of their high ethical standards.

Winebloggers-logo_square-jmv Usually I keep my nose out of stuff like this, but some of Parker's recent comments on wine blogs and the upcoming Wine Bloggers Conference were offensive, hypocritical, and a sign that Parker, the independent consumer advocate, is perhaps primarily the Parker advocate.

In a thread attacking wine bloggers (which is fine with me, everyone is fair game), Robert Parker personally weighs in on the upcoming Wine Bloggers Conference, Wine Bloggers, and the wine industry buying favor of the sea of bloggers

What bothers me is not his criticism, but that he declares "blobbers" as misinformed, distorters of the truth, and spreaders of falsehoods all over the net.  But he says this  right after he falsely insinuates that the wine industry is picking up accommodations, travel, and providing even more than a "sloppy wet kiss" to throngs of unwashed at the upcoming Wine Bloggers Conference.  Then he knocks the bevvy hungry sponsors that have been snubbed by the Wine Advocate (who only reviews the creme de la creme of the wine world) and who must bottomfeed to find other outlets, and then also that wine bloggers must be in bed with the CA wine industry... But isn't this a distortion of the truth and the spreading of falsehoods to his paying customers to try and protect his value?  I guess Bob won't be the keynote at the conference this year....  (PS- I wish someone would pick up my travel, the Dirty South Wine revenue stream has all been going to charity).

Like it or not, no one has the influence of Robert Parker (today).  But--The market of consumers that is actually still growing, are less familiar with the Wine Advocate, and far more apt to listen to free commentary of Gary Vaynerchuk, Alder Yarrows, Alice Feiring, Lyle Fass and dozens of others before plopping down money for a subscription to Parker.

Are things coming unwound at the Wine Advocate?

And does anyone who reads a wine blog really care?

Here Comes the 2nd Annual North American Wine Bloggers Conference! #wbc 09

Winebloggers-logo_square-jmv
Registration is now open for the 2nd Annual North American Wine Bloggers Conference.

There are rumblings in the wings that the Dirty South could be representing in a big way this year.

I described last year's event as the Monterrey Pop Festival of the Wine Blogosphere...  If it goes off half as well as last year, it could cause a serious disturbance in the force.  Check these out for a quick recap of WBC 08.

With traditional media shedding wine writers, and wineries looking for cost effective ways to reach consumers, this year's conference is going to be in full force.

More details to come, but It's time to get on the bus!

The bus came by and I got on, and that's where it all began.

Mini Recap: Wine Bloggers Conference and Fancy Dancin'

IMG_5448

There is still too much to process to say exactly what I learned at the Wine Bloggers Conference.  But, I can easily say what I felt-  free flowing energy on the move.

As you'd expect, the attendees were savvy, curious, and ready to both make and experience change in the way information about wine is discussed, shared, and interconnected  But- What was more interesting, were the companies that participated in it-  Some had a clear view and an understanding of where we as a group were headed (though I'm still trying to figure out where I left my keys), but more interestingly were the ones that didn't know what we were doing, just that they had to come along and be some of the first to participate.

As a non WIne Blogger, what does all this mean?  There are now hundreds of new outlets for you to learn, experience, and enjoy the world of wine.  Whether it is academic, social, regional, industry oriented, search tools, or just wine entertainment-  there is more quality information online, being produced by people with passion, humor, and insight than ever before.

I'm off to catch a flight back to the ATL..... and hopefully 4hrs of continuous sleep.

Grimace Says Sleep is for the WEAK! Wine Bloggers Conference Day 1

Day 1 Recap (brief)

Rule 1 - SPIT SPIT SPIT!

Rule 2   This is  Event is Awesome!  (if that could somehow be a rule?)

A lot of wine crossed these dirty south lips yesterday-  Easily 50+ different wines.  I lost count and it could have easily been double that  (but I was spitting! most of the time...)

A lot of generosity has been given by sponsors, speakers, and wineries.  Gary Vaynerchuk was our Friday keynote and even he donated his time /did his speech for free to our group.  Huge props to Gary V!

There are some great bloggers here-  Check out some of the links on the left (Wine Blogs/Non-ATL)

Kick Ranch

Dick and Kathy from Kick Ranch Vineyards  hosted an incredible lunch and tasting for the crew.  What a great idea to do this at a vineyard as opposed to a winery!  A lot of great juice was being poured that was made from some kick ass, Kick Ranch GrapesPax, Rosenblum, Carica, Hibou de Nuit, Sanglier, Shane, Lynmar, and plenty more (I'll list them all when I can).  This was an awesome opportunity to try great wines grown from the same vineyards.  Well they all pretty much tasted the same..... F'n gooood!!!!!  There are some great grapes being grown here.

Live Blogging / Wine Speed Dating was next-

About 14 producers poured wines for each table in 2-3 minute lightning rounds.

It is tough to taste and type, my white MacBook is now purple in places-  All Grimace style!

My standout--James Davd Cellars Muscat Blanc- Inviting like- Ol' grannie's perfume & mini-confectionary treats! (but smelling or tasting like neither)  This stuff was bone dry and tasty.   I'll post more on the others when back in the ATL.

New Zealand Tasting-

Miles of of Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir.... but hidden in the corner were a few tasty Gewurztraminers that were completely delicious.  Dirty South Wine is a total hussy for that shizz!

Dry Creek Valley Dinner and Keynote

Wines and Dinner sponsored by the Wine Growers of Dry Creek Valley.  A great dinner and wine, and a thunderous speech by Gary Vaynerchuk on wine blogging, wine media, and hustle!

After Bash

Like we needed more wine?

New York (Finger Lakes & Long Island), Oregon, and a couple of OH wines out the wazoo!

Oregon quality is no secret, but man NY has some juice going on.

More to come-  SLEEP IS FOR THE WEAK!!!!!

(PS-- Sometime last night I determined Grimace is my soul Animal!)

Wine Bloggers Conf. is Days Away- Can You Dig it?

Hold onto your Caramel Apple Empanadas!

The 1st Annual
is just days away!

Bored_people2
This Friday-Sunday, 160 Wine Bloggers will be assembling in Sonoma County, CA. to clink glasses and share their fascinating tales of wine, while reminiscing for hours about the glamour of blogging with other people who love to pontificate about wine and blogging!  A virtual Loya Jirga of the North American wine bloggerati!  (zzzzzzzz...?)

The hype and hysteria surrounding the event has been titillating, and I'm sure the anticipation has been crippling you even more than hitting refresh on Bloomberg every 3 minutes for the past 4 weeks.  So devoted readers of Dirty South Wine, buckle yourselves in for 72 hours of non-stop coverage of me sleeping off 60 hours of non-stop coverage.

With dozens of  incredible sponsors like The CIA, wine.woot, and the Sonoma County Vintners, the 1st Annual North American Wine Bloggers Conference looks like it is going to be seriously plush, and by plush, I don't mean--

In all seriousness, this should kick ass, but I better be coming home with like a huge trophy or something...

Now I just need to figure out what to do Sun. afternoon after the conference-  Hit some wineries, the Pinot on the River Festival, or just play it by ear...?
